Ted tried to compartmentalize his thoughts but felt any semblance of control slipping away. Jerry grabbed his hand.
“Dad, I’m scared,” Jerry said. “What if the water gets us?”
Ted swallowed hard. He didn’t want to say everything would be OK because he didn’t know. But suddenly he knew and put his arm around Jerry’s shoulder.
“There’s a song I enjoy listening to,” Ted said. “The words say, ‘Todo va a estar bien,’ which means everything will be all right. The reason I like it is because it’s true. No matter what happens, God has a plan. Pastor David Jeremiah said he learned more in adversity than prosperity. This may be the hardest thing we’ve ever done but hold onto Jesus because we know he’ll never let go of us.”
Ted looked up and his mouth dropped open as a thunderous roar of water rolled inland. He instinctively picked Jerry up and threw him over his shoulder.
“Close your eyes and keep your head down!” Ted yelled.
Running as fast as he could, Ted’s legs soon became heavy. With each step, the soft ground seemed like a Navy SEALs torture pit. His lungs screamed for mercy, and his arms bellowed in resistance.
“Dad!” Jerry screamed. “The water!”
